La Belle Assiette is a private chef company that operates across the UK, and they kindly invited me to host a dinner party with their chef Dardan Dojli. Their chefs can cater for anything from a romantic dinner date to a corporate lunch – they do the shopping, the cooking and the washing up! Of course, I jumped at the chance to try this out and invited some friends over to join me. Here’s the verdict.
There is a wide selection of chefs available and each chef has a number of menus you can choose from. Our menu was:
Chevre bouche goats cheese mousse. A fine tart of red onion and port marmalade, rocket salad port dressing
Harissa spiced rack of lamb with smoked aubergine puree, wilted baby spinach, butternut squash, pomegranate and a rosemary jus
Elderflower and crème fraiche tart with a raspberry sorbet
The starter was delicious! The goats cheese was irresistible creamy but not at all sickly as it sometimes is. This was my favourite course of the menu (that’s why it made the main picture!).
The main was also incredibly tasty. I don’t actually like aubergine but the flavours all tasted so good together I didn’t even notice it. The lamb was cooked to perfection and, though it looked like a small portion, the amount was just right.
The dessert was, you guessed it, amazing. However, it was a bit too sharp for me so I didn’t actually finish it. I definitely regretted that decision an hour later when all I could think about was my left over tart! Overall, the food was insane. The presentation was of the same quality of the best restaurants in town and all in the comfort of my own home! There were clear plates all round (apart from my dessert!) and not a single complaint from the guests. I’m not sure it would have been the same reaction if I had cooked 😉
La Belle Assiette do not provide any drinks with the meal so I asked each guest to bring a bottle of wine. I also purchased a bottle of red and white from Simply Fresh in Bethnal Green. They have a barrel of each which they rotate every 4-6 weeks so you can refill your bottles and try something new each time! The wines were French this time around and went down very well indeed – and for a £5 refill it’s a bargain!
Chef Dardan arrived at the flat about 3 hours before the first course was to be served. He brought all of the ingredients and many of the utensils needed to create the perfect 3 course dinner for 8! Chef Dardan was friendly and talkative but not at all intrusive. He set up shop in the kitchen, let me know what he needed and then got on with it.
The biggest challenge was resisting the aromas that were teasing me from the kitchen! Once all the guests were seated and ready, Chef Dardan started bringing out the dishes, reminding us of each course. He answered any questions that guests had and then disappeared back into his temporary office. After dessert, the wine continued to flow and it seemed like, in a flash, Chef Dardan came out to say that he was all cleared up and ready to go! The kitchen showed absolutely no sign of anything being cooked let alone a full on dinner party…I’m fairly certain it was cleaner than when he arrived.
The Fine Print
La Belle Assiette has over 200 chefs who can host parties across the UK. The pricing depends on the chef, the menu and the number of guests – the more guests you have, the lower the price. On average, a meal for 2 would be £100 per person whereas a meal for 8 could be around £35 per person. The price includes everything mentioned above (no drinks). You can book easily on the website and a credit card payment must be made to secure the booking. You wonderful readers have a cheeky discount code at the bottom of this post in case you’d like to try it out yourself.
It’s not every day you can say you’ve had a private chef come to your home and cook a 3 course meal for you and your friends. La Belle Assiette is a great opportunity to live like a celeb for a night and at a similar price to going out to a normal restaurant for dinner like peasants(!) It’s also a good option if you are having a corporate dinner and want to do something a bit different – a La Belle Assiette chef could come to your office if you have any meeting rooms which can be dressed up. It’s an experience I would certainly recommend and will probably do again myself.
