Anyone who knows me knows that one of my great aims in life is to make it onto a ’30 under 30′ list. Why? Because that’s what happens when you’ve done something to change the world, whether that be the world of business, the world of humanitarian action or anything else. But, let’s be honest, how likely is it that I, or any average person, will change the world before age 30? While these lists are inspirational, they can also be demotivating, making us think things like ‘Why haven’t I done anything like this yet?’, ‘Am I running behind?’, ‘I could never do anything like that!’ – because these lists highlight the exceptions not the rules.
With the above in mind, I was delighted to see that Vanessa Vallely, creator of We Are The City
, has launched a new awards concept. While the ’30 under 30′
bunch are an exception, the thousands of men and women who are on the right path for having a major impact on their industries need some recognition too. These rising stars should be celebrated and encouraged so that they can reach their full potential. Whether that happens at age 30 or age 70 is irrelevant.
The We Are The City Rising Star Awards are specifically for outstanding female individuals below management level in a number of industries including law, journalism and sport. So, I encourage you all to nominate either yourself or someone you know! Nominations opened today and will close on 26th June, with the shortlist being announced on 20th July. Good luck!
