#WorkoutWednesday: BOOM Cycle with Altura

working girl london boom cycle with altura
I’ve only ever been spinning once, and I found it so difficult that I never went back 🙈 The combination of my knee injury and utter despair for leg day means that I have been actively avoiding spinning – I haven’t even tried 1Rebel Ride yet! So, when Altura invited me to a blogger event at BOOM Cycle, I took this to be the perfect opportunity to dip my toe back in.

About Altura
Altura is a brand for people who love to cycle – indoors or outdoors. Their tagline is ‘engineered performance’ meaning that, through rigorous testing, their products are designed to keep you in the saddle longer. You can see from our snaps that Altura kitted us all out in their cycle shorts and jerseys…and I think we look pretty fly! The cycle shorts did make me feel like I had a nappy on but actually looked completely fine – you couldn’t see the padding at all! And having completed one spinning class with nothing but a thin layer of yoga pant between my nether regions and the saddle, I can vouch for the level of extra comfort these shorts provide 😰 If you’re a cyclist – or a spinner – you should definitely check out the latest range from Altura – let me know what you think!

BOOM Cycle

Difficulty:
1. Barely broke a sweat
2. Too out of breath to sing along
3. In the zone!
4. Couldn’t move the next day

This class is a definite 4! It’s a non-stop leg workout but don’t worry, the rest of your body gets involved too. With a weights section and a number of sitting/standing variations, the class provides a full body work out for a full 30 minutes, with absolutely nowhere to hide. As with any exercise class, you can amend exercises to suit your ability but the pumping music and the sense of camaraderie you feel being able to see all the other cyclists around you definitely encourages you to push yourself to your limit. Walking up stairs the next day was pretty tough…

Looking slightly sweatier after the class...

Fun Factor:
1. I would rather be in bed
2. Glad I tried it once
3. Such fun!
4. Sign me up now

I have to give the class a 2 🙁 – I think it’s safe to say any kind of spinning or indoor cycling is simply not for me. That said, if you are into those kinds of classes, I think that what BOOM Cycle offers is great. The playlist was amazing, the instructors are super friendly but also super strict (in a good way!) and the studio is nice. The delicious post workout smoothies are also an added bonus. I didn’t love the class because I don’t like spinning but actually, despite that, the whole experience was pretty enjoyable!

The Fine Print
BOOM Cycle is in an awesome location in Holborn, just round the corner from Gymbox. There is also a branch in Shoreditch. Classes run 7 days a week throughout the day and there are a range of ways to pay. You can buy individual classes for £16 or save some money by buying in bulk. You could also get unlimited rides for £105 per month. If you’re a newbie, the intro offer is a sweet deal at £29 for 3 rides over 14 days.

Final Word
BOOM Cycle definitely packed a punch and is not for the faint hearted. The class is high energy from start to finish, and the instructor is with you all the way which is great for motivation. As a novice, I couldn’t really tell what was different from spinning…so I guess if you like spinning, you will probably love BOOM!

#WorkoutWednesday: Martial Arts as a Toning Exercise for Women

This is a guest post from Sabrina Klein.

When it comes to working out and weight loss, it can become frustrating and tiresome when those wobbly parts feel like they just aren’t improving. We each have our own stubborn trouble zones that take a little extra work to tighten and tone – and, even though our friends tell us we look gorgeous, we can’t help but focus on these ‘problem’ areas. Many of us have tried countless diets and workouts specifically targeted at these areas but still find them hard to shift. Even though I know that everyone is different and various exercises work differently on different bodies, I actually started going to ask women who I thought looked so athletically fit and had a great body, what’s their secret? When Chantelle invited me both to try out their new sports bra AND take part in a trampoline rebound class, how could I say no?! I went for a fitting at their John Lewis concession and then counted down the days ’til I got to put my made to order new swag to the test. Here’s the verdict!

Omnida is a new fitness and yoga studio in North London, aiming to make fitness accessible and fun for everyone. They invited a few bloggers to come and get sweaty with them at a hot yoga class and I, of course, jumped at the chance!

The team behind Omnida have worked tirelessly for the last year or so to build a beautiful studio complete with one hot fitness studio and one larger dance studio. The programme of classes ranges from Bollywood Blast fitness to Pilates, and all classes are suitable for beginners and gym bunnies alike. There is also a range of classes specifically for children. Here’s my verdict on the Hot Yoga class taught by Nicola.

I absolutely love trying new things, especially new kinds of workouts. So, when I read about Flying Fantastic aka “the greatest gym on earth”, a dedicated fitness center which focuses on aerial silks, hoops, slings and trapeze, I couldn’t wait to attend a class. I mean, I always wanted to join the circus when I was little….
